Extended School Year
Some of your children may qualify for Extended School Year services. These services are considered each year by the IEP team. These services must be noted in the IEP for your child to qualify. We have already had parents sign up for students who are not eligible for ESY. If you are unsure, check with your child's teacher. They can also provide you with your child's student ID# which is necessary on the sign-up form. If you qualify, you will still need to sign up. This program is optional for those who qualify so we rely on you to tell us you would like to take advantage of it. Follow the link above.
When determining eligibility for ESY services, IEP teams will look at whether or not the child is at risk of regressing – losing skills and knowledge – during a break from school. They will also look at recoupment – how long it might take for the child to regain the skills and knowledge they may have lost over the break. If the summer break/school vacation is likely to lead to a significant regression in the progress the child has been making, and/or if the child’s progress will be significantly delayed when the break is over, the school will determine what services may be required to prevent that from happening.
For students who do not qualify for ESY we encourage you to take advantage of community recreational programs or camps. If you are a Regional Center client, they may have a list of activities that your child may enjoy or benefit from.
